As Sweden announces the commencement of National Pothole Week, the motoring association M Sverige is urging all road users to report any potholes they encounter, highlighting a significant and growing issue in the country.

According to Tony Gunnarsson, a traffic safety expert at M Sverige, every tenth driver has recently been involved in a traffic accident due to poor road maintenance, with potholes causing dangerous vehicle maneuvers and increased risk of accidents, including hydroplaning.

The association emphasizes that uneven roads can lead to increased drowsiness, reduced vehicle control, and distraction from other traffic participants.

With more than a quarter of state roads in poor condition due to deferred maintenance and heavy traffic, M Sverige calls for urgent action to address the underfunded infrastructure, which has accumulated a maintenance debt of around 25 billion SEK.

The campaign aims to make authorities aware of the extent of road damage and to prevent the normalization of the problem..
